Acne is the term for the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can appear typically on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Acne is not life-threatening, but it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of lesions, skin type and the patient’s age and lifestyle, but on average results are visible in six to eight weeks.
Known as nevi (singular “nevus”), moles and other birthmarks are benign pigmented spots or patches of skin that range in color from tan, brown and black (moles) to red, pink or purple (vascular nevi, such as strawberry hemangiomas or port wine stains). Though most birthmarks are harmless, they may develop into cancer. Moles exhibiting any of the following warning signs should be examined by a professional immediately:
- Larger than six millimeters
- Bleeding
- Rapidly changes in color, size or shape
- Has multiple colors
- Is located where it can't be easily monitored, such as on the scalp
Depending on their depth, location and color, as well as the patient’s skin type, age and other factors, treatment for benign but unattractive birthmarks may take the form of laser or pulsed light therapy or surgical excision.
Botulinum Toxin Type A (BOTOX® Cosmetic) is a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which contains the same toxin that causes food poisoning. When used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, existing frown lines are smoothed out and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a week. Visit the BOTOX® website.
BOTOX® is now FDA approved for severe axillary hyperhidrosis. If you have difficulty with excessive sweating and other treatments have not controlled the problem this may be a possible treatment for you: BOTOX® severe sweating.
Collagen is part of the natural support structure of the skin. After the age of 30, collagen decreases at a rate of about 1% per year. However, sun exposure over one's lifetime dramatically affects collagen and is responsible for most of the loss of elasticity and fullness of the skin which occurs with aging. Collagen replacement therapy replenishes the skin's collagen layer, smoothing lines, wrinkles and scars, and adding definition to lip borders from the inside out.
The most effective treatment for leg veins has traditionally been sclerotherapy, where an injection is administered into the vein, eradicating it. Although this probably remains the most effective technique for leg vein removal, newer laser technologies offer comparable results. Long pulsed Nd:YAG laser is a good choice for those patients who wish to avoid needles. |
